Half a Century of Global Standard Authority: The IFRS Foundation

The IFRS Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit public interest organization. Restructured in 2001 as the successor to the IASC founded in 1973, it develops global reporting standards used in 169 countries and jurisdictions. Headquartered in Canary Wharf, London, the Foundation houses the IASB (International Accounting Standards Board) for accounting standards and the ISSB (International Sustainability Standards Board) for sustainability standards.

The legal framework for sustainability reporting in Turkey is governed by the Public Oversight, Accounting and Auditing Standards Authority (KGK). KGK has adapted IFRS standards into Turkish law under the name TSRS and made them mandatory for over 300 companies. Source: KGK Official Website.

From TCFD to ISSB

A New Era in Climate Disclosures: TCFD Transferred Its Role to ISSB

The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) was established in 2015 within the Financial Stability Board (FSB) at the request of the G20. The TCFD framework consists of four core pillars: governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets. With the publication of ISSB standards, the TCFD concluded its mandate in October 2023 and transferred its monitoring responsibilities to the ISSB. FSB-TCFD official source.

IFRS S2 fully incorporates the TCFD framework. This means that organizations that have already invested in TCFD compliance can transition to ISSB as a direct continuation. IFE has been among Turkey's TCFD supporters and has carried this expertise into its IFRS Foundation partnership. For more information, see the IFRS Foundation sustainability standards page .

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About IFRS Sustainability Training

What does IFRS Sustainability Alliance membership mean?

The IFRS Sustainability Alliance is a knowledge-sharing and training network managed by the IFRS Foundation with over 400 member organizations. Member institutions gain access to the latest research, technical guides, and global implementation examples related to sustainability reporting. IFE is one of the few educational institution representatives from Turkey in this network.

What is the difference between ISSB S1 and ISSB S2 standards?

ISSB S1 (IFRS S1) governs how a company discloses all of its sustainability-related risks and opportunities to the public. ISSB S2 (IFRS S2) covers only climate-related financial risks and opportunities, fully incorporating the former TCFD framework. The two standards are applied together and were published by the IFRS Foundation on June 26, 2023.

Which companies are covered by TSRS in Turkey?

Turkey's Sustainability Reporting Standards (TSRS) are set by the KGK (Public Oversight, Accounting and Auditing Standards Authority). As of 2024, over 300 institutions including publicly listed companies under the Capital Markets Board (CMB), banks, and insurance companies are required to comply with TSRS. The scope is expanding every year.

Why is IFE's relationship with the IFRS Foundation important?

As a Licensed Training Partner, IFE is one of the few Turkish finance education institutions authorized to use official IFRS Foundation content. This status enhances the international validity of IFE's certificates and guarantees that training materials are sourced directly from the IFRS Foundation.

Is the TCFD framework still valid?

The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) concluded its mandate in October 2023 and transferred its monitoring responsibilities to the ISSB. Because IFRS S2 fully incorporates TCFD's four-pillar framework (governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets), organizations that are already TCFD-compliant can complete the transition to ISSB more easily.

How are IFE's corporate training programs customized?

IFE conducts a preliminary analysis meeting with corporate clients to assess their current TSRS compliance level. Based on this analysis, the training format (in-person, virtual classroom, or online), duration, depth of scope, and schedule are customized to align with the institution's reporting calendar. Sector-specific module content is offered for banking, insurance, and capital markets.

Which professional groups is the IFRS sustainability certificate suitable for?

Certification programs under IFRS S1 and S2 are designed for corporate sustainability managers, independent auditors, Chief Financial Officers (CFOs), risk managers, investment analysts, and CMB-licensed professionals. The certificate directly contributes to mandatory compliance reporting under KGK requirements.

What is the IFRS Foundation's official position in Turkey?

The IFRS Foundation does not maintain a direct representation in Turkey. The implementation and compliance process in Turkey is managed through the KGK. IFE serves as the bridge, holding the Licensed Training Partner designation assigned by the IFRS Foundation in Turkey.
